How Does a WiFi Extender (Wireless Repeater) Work?
A WiFi extender, also called a wireless repeater or range booster, picks up your router’s signal and re-broadcasts it, so a room that was too far from the router gets a usable connection. This guide explains how it works, where to put it and what to try if it does not help.
How a WiFi extender works
- The extender connects to your existing WiFi network, like any other device.
- It receives the router’s signal and sends it out again from its own location.
- Your phone or laptop connects to the extender in the weak area, and the extender passes the traffic to the router.
Because the extender is both receiving and re-sending, a basic single-radio extender can reduce the speed in the extended area. That is normal, and it is why placement matters.
Where to place it
- Halfway between the router and the dead zone, in a spot that still gets a good signal from the router.
- Not in the dead zone itself, because it cannot extend a signal it cannot receive.
- Away from thick walls, metal objects, microwaves and other sources of interference.
- Higher up and in an open spot, rather than behind furniture.
Basic setup
- Plug the extender into a power outlet close to the router for the first setup.
- Connect to the extender’s network, or use its setup button or app, as the instructions describe.
- Choose your home WiFi network and enter its password.
- Move the extender to its final position and wait for the signal light to show a good connection.
- Connect your devices to the extender’s network name.
If it is not helping
- Move it closer to the router.
- Restart the router and the extender.
- Check for a firmware update, and keep other devices from crowding the same channel.
- If the dead zone is large, a mesh WiFi system or a wired access point may work better than a single extender.
