What to look for in a jump starter

• Peak amps. The figure on the box is usually a short peak, not a continuous rating. Compare it with the engine size it is listed for.
• Engine size and fuel. Smaller petrol engines need less power than large petrol or diesel engines. The product page lists what each model is meant for.
• Battery capacity. Larger capacity usually means more starts per charge, and it can also charge a phone.
• Safety features. Look for reverse-polarity and short-circuit protection, and read the instructions before first use.
• Keep it charged. Recharge the unit every few months and store it out of extreme heat or cold.
